Development of the language skills necessary for communication (speaking and writing) and comprehension (listening and reading) skills for students who grew up in an environment where Spanish was spoken frequently.

Useful terminology and expressions for the medical and social service situation, with a minimum of grammar.
SPAN 2313 Spanish for Medical Interpretation II
Useful terminology and expressions for the medical or social service situation, with a minimum of grammar.
SPAN 3003 Conversation and Composition I
Development of advanced control of Spanish communication and comprehension through conversation and composition based on analysis of authentic short texts and media.
Three hours of applied course work.

SPAN 3013 Conversation and Composition II
Prerequisite: SPAN 3003 or permission of instructor.

SPAN 3023 Introduction to Linguistics
A study of basic concepts in language, comparative characteristics of different languages, and the principles of linguistic investigation.
SPAN 3113 Business Spanish
Prerequisite: SPAN 3003 or permission of instructor.
The study of business culture, terminology, presentations and cases in the Hispanic world. This course will present a detailed examination of business practices in Latin America and other Spanish speaking countries. Emphasis will be given to business protocols when conducting business correspondence, personal interviews, and appointments, among others. Attention will also be given to the use of technology in business.
SPAN 3123 Spanish Civilization and Culture
Prerequisite: SPAN 3013 or permission of instructor.
Study of the geography, history, arts, institutions, customs and contemporary life of the Spanish people.
SPAN 3133 Spanish-American Civilization and Culture
Prerequisite: SPAN 3013 or permission of instructor.
Study of the geography, history, arts, institutions, customs, and contemporary life of the peoples of Spanish America, with some attention to the major pre-Colombian civilizations.
SPAN 3143 Study Abroad
Prerequisite: Completion of SPAN 2023 or SPAN 2033 or equivalent and and permission of the World Languages Study Abroad supervisor.
Study of the contemporary language and culture in a Spanish speaking country.
SPAN 3163 Community Internship Experience
Study of contemporary language and culture in a Spanish- speaking community or setting.
Note: May be taken instead of SPAN 3143 to meet degree requirements.
SPAN 3173 Hispanic Civilizations and Cultures
Prerequisite: SPAN 3013 or permission of the instructor.
Study of the geography, history, arts, institutions, customs and contemporary life of Hispanic peoples, with some attention to civilizations that occupied the Iberian Peninsula and major pre-Colombian civilizations.
SPAN 3213 Advanced Grammar and Usage
The course is designed to build writing competence and strengthen grammatical competence. Grammar will be studied within the context of writing assignments. The course will deepen the knowledge of the language through the usage of applied linguistics, syntax, grammar, and semantics.

Introduction to the study of Hispanic literature.

Theory and practice based course on English-Spanish interpretation for health care and court settings.

This course is designed to strengthen students' oral communication skills.

The purpose of this course is to provide students with the fundamental knowledge of Spanish linguistics as the basis for future application of linguistic principles. This course explores Spanish phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics.

Intensive on-campus exploration of the principles of curriculum construction, applied methods, professional collaboration, and evaluation as related to teaching French, German, or Spanish, followed by professional internship application of these principles under the supervision of a qualified departmental instructor.

This survey course offers an overview of the history of U.S. Latino/a literature, introducing the major trends and placing them into a historical framework stretching from the nineteenth century to today. Topics to be discussed include the construction of identity in terms of race, gender, sexuality, and class; bilingualism and code-switching; the experiences of exile, the immigrant, the marketing of the Latino/a identity; and the relationship of the artist to his or her community.

SPAN 6003 Introduction to the M.A. in Spanish
The emphasis of this course is on analytical reading and academic writing. The course provides the student with research and analytical tools used in the humanities in order to develop the ability to handle larger expository and argumentative units and to deal more effectively with the writing process. Topics vary from year-to-year.
SPAN 6023 Literary Theory
Examination of the fundamental concepts of literary theory and criticism and their applications to Spanish texts, poetry, narrative, and drama.
SPAN 6063 Spanish American Literature and Culture
The course will examine Latin American literature from the turn of the century modernism to present time. This will include the multiple aspects of modernism, realism and regionalism, post-modernist poetry, contemporary prose, and theatre. Specific themes will be studied such as man versus nature, man versus society, gender issues, and the representation of women. The use of art and film will also be studied.
SPAN 6133 Seminar in Spanish Literature
Seminar in Spanish Literature will be a seminar-style course that examines major writers in Spanish literature. The course will examine each work within its structure. Particular attention will be paid to social, intellectual, and existential aspects.

This course is designed to provide more advanced grammatical and syntactical features, increased ability with idiomatic expressions, and vocabulary enlargement.
SPAN 6503 History of the Spanish Language
An examination of different aspects involved in the development of the Spanish language. Topics to be considered may include, among others, the evolution of different linguistic systems of Spanish and the socio-cultural factors and context that influenced its development. The course will entail analysis of texts that reflect changes in language. Usage and attitudes toward language.
SPAN 6701 Teaching College Spanish
Teaching college Spanish is a graduate-level introduction to second language learning/teaching theory, methodology, and practice. Supervised teaching, preparation of instructional and testing materials, and practice in evaluation. Readings and bibliographic work in second language learning/teaching theory, practice, and research.
Note: Required of all graduate assistants.
