The 30-hour Master in Education in K-12 Literacy program will prepare K-12 Literacy Specialists and Dyslexia Therapists to work with students and other professionals to improve the literacy knowledge and skills of students in the school/district and to work with students identified as having characteristics of dyslexia.
This program may be completed online.
Unconditional Admission
Students are eligible to apply for unconditional admission to the Master of Education degree program in K-12 Literacy if they meet the admission requirements for Graduate College.
Conditional Admission
Applicants who fail to meet the minimum requirements for admission have the opportunity for conditional admission if applicant meets the minimum graduate admission standards and upon a successful appeal to the program director. Students admitted under a conditional status must earn a cumulative 3.0 GPA on the first twelve (12) graduate hours in the program.
Students who complete the program will demonstrate:
- Systematic and research-based understanding of Dyslexia
- Knowledge in phonological and phonemic awareness, sound and symbol relationships, alphabet knowledge, decoding skills rapid naming skills and encoding skills
- Fluency in the Response to Intervention (RTI) process.
- Fluency in determining and designing appropriate interventions that are systematic multi-sensory and evidence based.
- Knowledge of the theoretical, historical, and evidence-based foundations of literacy and language.
- Knowledge of research, relevant theories, pedagogies, essential concepts of diversity and equity.
- Skill in administrating and analyzing screening data.
- Understanding of the role of literacy professionals in schools
- The use of foundational knowledge to critique and implement literacy curricula to meet the needs of all learners and to design, implement and evaluate evidence-based literacy instruction for all learners.
