Nursing Assistant, Certificate of Proficiency

The Certificate of Proficiency in Nursing Assistant is a course of study that prepares students for the certification examination required to work in the nursing assistant field. Health care facilities, particularly nursing homes, require more trained Certified Nurse's Assistants to cope with the increases in patients served.

To receive a Certificate of Proficiency, application must be made to the Office of Student Services. Students must be currently enrolled to request a Certificate of Proficiency be awarded.
Graduates of the Certificate of Proficiency in Nursing Assistant program will be able to:
- Demonstrate necessary skills for providing safe nursing care in the lab and on clinical units
- Communicate with the patient and members of the health care team using appropriate verbal and written techniques.
- Address the needs of the patient in a holistic manner.
- Use the nursing process to observe and document accurately those observations and the care provided.
- Recognize the need for confidentiality and the basic rights of all patients.
- Act as a patient advocate.
- Utilize nursing care products with a minimum of waste and dispose of wastes and biohazards in an appropriate manner.
- Demonstrate proficiency in nursing skills related to the following:
- Promoting elimination
- Meeting patient nutritional needs, calculating intake and output
- Assessing vital signs
- Assisting the patient with basic needs
- Preventing infections
- Assisting the inactive patient
- Fostering communication
- Making observations
