The Bachelor of Art in Art Education degree is designed to prepare teacher candidates for teaching careers in grades K-12 Art Education. The program recognizes three essential components in the education of a prospective teacher: a strong general education, an in-depth knowledge of the Art field and the developmental characteristics and diversity of K-12 student learners.
HANDS-ON LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
Internship I and II students will work full-time in a cooperating school with a capable mentor teacher.
The period of internship is considered by many to be the most vital phase of professional development for pre-service teachers.

Art history electives ART 3113 Art History, American, ART 3143 Art History, Asia & Pacific, ART 3153 History of Digital Art, ART 4113 Art History, Art After 1945, ART 4723 Art History Seminar can be used toward this requirement.

SEED 4553 Classroom Application of Educational Psychology and SPED 4052 Educating Diverse and Exceptional Learners are part of the Residency A requirements in the completion of a yearlong residency experience as per Arkansas Division of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) requirements. In this Residency A semester immediately prior to the student’s last semester (Residency B), students must complete a minimum 270-hour field-experience component as part of the DESE requirements for teacher licensure.
Students who complete the program will demonstrate:
Content - The art education candidate will Identify and effectively apply the use of visual art concepts and vocabulary in verbal and written formats
Skills - The art education candidate will demonstrate proficiency in the use of art tools, materials, and technology appropriate to the field of art education.
Concepts - The art education candidate will demonstrate understanding of contemporary art trends, major artists’ works and historical movements.
Pedagogy - The art education teacher education candidate will demonstrate knowledge of planning a substantive unit of instruction developmentally appropriate to grade level and linked to national standards in the visual arts.
Implementation - The art teacher education candidate will demonstrate the professional ability to implement a unit of instruction through effectively setting clear goals and objectives, demonstrating art skills/processes, integrating critical thinking, pacing tasks, applying appropriate assessment, and engaging in reflective practice.
